He is now 32, & on his way back to Vietnam after visiting his family in Bhutan. He has been studying in Vietnam, & returning for additional schooling. After leaving Vietnam, he will return to Bhutan to do his three years of mediation before becoming a full fledged monk. Often times families send their sons to become monks because they are incorrigible. The same can happen with the girls.
In Bhutan there are 12,000 monks & 4,000 female nuns (monks). The female monks must shave their heads, so sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between monks & nuns.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://judytravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/img_0303.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>Snack bag on Bhutan Airlines featuring the National Flag of Bhutan.</image:title><image:caption>Snack bag on Bhutan Airlines featuring the National Flag of Bhutan.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://judytravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/img_0264.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_0264</image:title><image:caption>Last night in Thimpu, we donned the native costume called the Kira. Because of Poland’s tumultuous history, Poles have been immigrating for centuries. After WW2, Poland came under Communist rule. Anna told of the severe restrictions put on the Poles by the Soviets. This informative museum told of the struggles to finally gain independence. It all began in 1970 with a strike at the steel mill in Gdansk, & ended in 1989 when
Soviet control began to collapse, & Poland finally gained its independence & became a democratic society. Hope was gained in 1980 with an independence victory, but then martial law was declared, & the restrictive life remained in place, so hence the many years in between.
Certainly recent history, & many lessons to be taken from the Polish struggle today.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://judytravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/img_8049.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>Golabki: cabbage roll made of pork & rice.
